Lucinda was taken aback by his sudden action.
“What on earth are you doing?”
Nathan turned around and snapped, “Can’t you see? I’m kneeling on the washboard!”
As she saw his fury, Lucinda had expected him to dismantle the wardrobe. But instead, he was putting himself on time-out?

She couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
“Didn’t you just say it’s my fault? Then why are you punishing yourself right now?”
Nathan’s nose twitched, and tears started streaming down his face. He was so consumed by anger that the pain in his heart combined with the ache in his knees, intensified his sense of grief.

“Then what else can I do?! You’re pregnant. I can’t beat you, scold you, or bring myself to do any of that… You made a mistake, but you act so entitled, and there’s nothing I can do to you!
It’s my own fault for not being able to exert some level of control over you! I couldn’t control my emotions, and I ended up yelling at you! It’s all on me, so I’ll punish myself by kneeling on this washboard all night and reflect on my actions!”
The more he spoke, the sadder he became. Nonetheless, he straightened his back, assuming a proper posture while kneeling.
Lucinda was amused.

Lucinda had messed up, and as she saw Nathan compromise, kneeling on the washboard, her anger instantly vanished, replaced by guilt and distress.
She walked over to him and gently poked his shoulder, attempting to make amends.
“Alright, let’s stop arguing, okay?” she said, trying to reconcile.
Nathan snorted and ignored her.
